A Shayna Maidel

October 22 and 24 at 7pm, and October 23 at 8pm

Chase Collegiate School’s Highlander Theater Company is proud to present Barbara Lebow’s 1987 drama, A Shayna Maidel.  A powerful, haunting and deeply affecting portrait of a family through a poignant, imaginatively conceived examination of one divided family's experience. Widely produced by America's leading regional theatres, the play went on to become a long-run Off-Broadway success. The play concerns a pair of sisters reunited in New York City after the Nazi oppression. As the sisters attempt to restore a family harmed by the Holocaust, the Manhattan based sister struggles to understand her sibling’s horrors while coping with her father’s poor attempts to protect her from the pain an ocean away.

Director Bob Cutrofello has chosen this work to honor the 70th year anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.  While the work uses this history for its backdrop, it is ultimately a story of immigrants assimilating into the American culture, a topic as timely as ever.
