As 9th grade students completed their study of Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, groups were formed and charged with designing the island on which the boys were stranded based on specific evidence from the text. Using iPads to search and discover, students built an island in the Design Labs and classroom, using found materials, supplemented with clay, Legos and dough. Finally, the students found a song that reflected the theme, characters and events in the story. Oral presentations interpreted the lyrics, while making a viable connection to text. Not only was the project a small-group interpretation of content, but it also reflected the open-ended nature of innovative learning experiences.
