Let's go fly a...
The words from this well-known song suggest the early days of spring, rediscovery of self, and the excitement that comes with having fun! How do teachers combine all of those elements, while maintaining the integrity of the science curriculum? Terri Hale has found the captivating combination, as she challenges eighth graders to prepare the following:
- Design a timeline of flight
- Learn the vocabulary of flight, using NASA websites,
- Research a specific topic of each student's choice and write a two-page paper, and
- BUILD A GLIDER!
As students began the early stages of finding accurate information for the timeline, the buzz in the classroom spoke to the enthusiasm of the students, as they examined airplanes, kites, birds, and more! Of course, the timeline for flight is matched with a timeline for completion of all aspects of this stimulating end-of-year project.
Stop by the middle school in the ensuing weeks to check the progress of our eighth graders. Look for updates in this column for demonstrations of flight, as original gliders (and our students) soar among the trees on the South lawn!
